THE TREE

This tree, which stands directly in front of our office door in Berkeley Square is the oldest of the plane (platanus) trees in the square.

It is more than two and a quarter centuries old and was planted in the year 1789, the year of the French Revolution and of the inauguration of George Washington as the first president of the USA. Haydn and Mozart were both alive and still composing in that year. 

The tree is possibly the oldest living object in the centre of London. Together with the other trees of the square it forms a dramatic green canopy in summer which is clearly visible from the air just north of Buckingham Palace and Green park (see picture below).

Unfortunately, since the taking of the picture above, the large horizontal limb at the bottom of the tree on the left side has had to be surgically removed in 2006, due to old age.
